There are many summer opportunities available to chemistry students, including
Here are some examples of how our students spend their summers:

2023年暑期活动: Neuroscience Fellowship at Bowdoin (Diaz-Rios 实验室)
经验: “整个夏天,我都在迪亚兹-里奥斯实验室工作, conducting a project titled "Age-dependent effects of Capsaicin 和 Menthol on the mammalian spinal CPG locomotor network". 这是一次有益的经历, where I was able to combine my interest for chemistry 和 biology through research. 我懂得了耐心的重要性, 团队合作, 和 intellectual curiosity that are needed for success in the research environment.”

Summer Camp Coordinator for The Works Museum in Bloomington, MN
经验: "I was the summer camp coordinator for The Works Museum, a children’s engineering museum. By the end of the summer, I helped facilitate approximately 75 different camps. I have gotten to combine my love for chemistry 和 science with that of education while also gaining experience in supervising 和 organization of programming. I am an aspiring museum exhibit designer for science museums 和 have had the chance to work with The Works in redesigning their exhibits. It’s been a great introduction to the field 和 solidified my interest in working with science museums.”

经验使用x射线衍射, 旋转涂布, 扫描电子显微镜, I analyzed the morphology 和 assembly of cobalt hydroxide carbonate crystals grown under various synthesis conditions. I also assisted with a separate project in the lab regarding the crystallization of aspirin 和 flufenamic acid. Though I began the summer feeling certain that I knew what my research experience would entail, I quickly learned that any novel research necessitates a lot of flexibility 和 problem solving. 整个夏天, 一旦我们解决了一个问题, we would immediately run headfirst into another, necessitating constant creative problem-solving, 开箱即用的思考, 和, 最重要的是, 协作, both with 我的实验室伙伴 和 the amazing faculty that surrounded us.”
经验: “Over the summer, I characterized a prospective Toll-receptor protein (GBI_03017-RA) in Gryllus bimaculatus蟋蟀. The primary focus of my research was to take a step toward elucidating the biological mechanisms behind the compensatory plasticity of the auditory system in the cricket. I learned everything from setting up polymerase chain reactions 和 Gibson assembly, 最终进入表演阶段 原位 hybridization to determine mRNA expression of 03017 in brain, ganglia, 和 whole embryo tissue. 谢谢你,霍希教授, 丽莎Ledwige, 我的实验室伙伴, 和 the MDIBL/NIH for your support 和 funding making this opportunity possible!”

经验: “I responded to 911 calls in northern Massachusetts. This experience taught me how about how important communication is in healthcare 和 about how people's 以前的 experiences with the medical system can affect their willingness to seek help. I'd 说出最有价值的东西 我 taken away from being an EMT is how to keep my cool when surrounded by chaos.”
经验: "During the summer I worked on the solid-state synthesis 和 characterization of novel quantum materials. These materials have interesting superconducting 和 magnetic capabilities that make them important for many optoelectronic devices 和 processes."
2023年夏季活动: CXD Summer Internship Grant at UMass Boston (Niya Sa 实验室)
经验: "I worked in an electrochemistry lab whose primary concentration is sustainable chemistry. I focused on conducting preliminary tests related to Prussian Blue deposition on gold, 以及对其稳定性的评估. This experience provided me with valuable insights into the complexities of battery functionality 和 the research endeavors aimed at transitioning from costly 和 environmentally unsound lithium batteries. 在这段时间里,我有幸 参与 in various electrochemistry conferences 和 gaining exposure to the graduate academic world by attending Ph.D. 学生论文和论文答辩."
大/小: 化学与法语研究
2023年夏季活动take a summer mechanics course (physics) at Southern Methodist University 和 shadowed an Ophthalmologist/视网膜外科医生
经验: "It was incredible to get ahead in my major through the summer physics course. 此外,我还能跟踪. Gregory Kozielec说 眼科医生 视网膜外科医生. I highly valued the clinical experience with patients. I was able to synthesize real-world connections from my Bowdoin science classes into the reasoning behind certain patient diagnoses. I found it highly valuable to gain this experience while I pursue a pre-medical track."
经验: “I was researching the synthesis of new cobalt catalysts for the dimerization of linear alpha olefins in the Broene 实验室. My work taught me how to use a photochemical apparatus, 施连克链接技术, 手套箱技术, 和 how to efficiently carry out multi day synthetic procedures.”
经验: “This summer I received the Amgen scholarship to study the human nuclear pore protein GP210 through protein crystallization. I learned a variety of methods in biochemistry to express purify 和 crystallize proteins 和 deepened my underst和ing of both protein mechanics 和 their chemical properties.”
